I eventually became a skilled hunter that could easily tell which skins were crappy and which were not. Very few were good enough for me. In fact, they had to be "perfect" in my very own sense (perhaps). Small details turned me off. But before that, there was one skin that I really liked:
DJ SD Amp
It's not an original and got some ugly spots, but overall it was nice to use. Spyamp (~spyseven), which I think I discovered afterwards, had more impressive looks – I wanted to use it, but I couldn't stand the playlist buttons. I found the "spy bloat" annoying as well.
I have saved a few skins from this time (–2001). I try to find some of them on the web. They're gone. How sad. But it makes me happy that personal homepages like this one still exists. I am reminded of Digitanium. The download links are dead though.
Then I find Ica's collection of Winamp skins, last updated 2003 it seems, and there, Digitanium 3 beside Mercury on page 6 – another lost skin that I feel nostalgic about. I think I deleted Digitanium because I didn't like the transparency thing. Mercury... why did I like it in the first place? Yeah, I was fond of shades of blue.
Another old favourite is a blue Dragon Ball Z skin called DBZ-Blue – it says "DBZ-TECHNO" in the main window. Never heard of Dragon Ball, but the skin looked cool. It reminds of listening to Das Boot.

thx for vitetris
great work~
Well, it kept me occupied much longer than I thought, but I learned a lot.
It's great to see that there is some activity on the public server, liquidham.se:34034 (just checked the log file).
